Formulation: Vancomycin Hydrochloride 500 mg Powder for Injection

Indications: Used in the treatment of serious staphylococcal or other Gram- positive infections when other drugs such as the penicillin cannot be used because of resistance or patient intolerance. It is used particularly in the treatment of methicillin- resistant staphylococcal infections in conditions such as brain abscess. Staphylococcal meningitis, peritonitis associated with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis and septicemia. Also used in the treatment and prophylaxis of endocarditis, for prophylaxis of surgical infection, and in intensive care and the management of immunocompromised patients. It is also used in the treatment of antibiotic associated colitis.

Dosage: The usual adult dose is 500mg every 6 hours or 1g every 12 hours.

Side Effects: Patients may develop anaphylactoid reactions, including hypotension, wheezing dyspnea, erythema, urticaria or pruritus. Rapid infusion may also cause flushing of the upper body or pain and muscle spasm of the chest and back.
